Smartphone-based telematics isn’t new — but it’s far more mainstream (and usable) than when early fleet apps first appeared. The core idea remains the same: use the phone’s sensors and location data to provide driver coaching and give managers visibility into risk patterns.
This article was originally triggered by GreenRoad’s early “Smartphone Edition” (code-named Asimov). The modern equivalent is the GreenRoad Drive app, which is still available on both iOS and Android and has had recent updates.
Yes. GreenRoad’s driver coaching app is currently listed as GreenRoad Drive:
That’s a good sign that smartphone-only deployment remains part of the product strategy, alongside installed hardware options.
Most modern “digital telematics” apps focus on:
GreenRoad’s own product pages describe the Drive app as turning a mobile device into an in-vehicle coaching tool with real-time feedback and insights.
A UK trade press report from 2013 described the “Asimov” smartphone edition as costing about £12.50 per month per unit at the time. That’s useful historical context, but it is not a reliable guide to current pricing, which typically varies by fleet size, features, and contract structure.
They can — but not in the guaranteed “50% to 90%” way older marketing-led articles sometimes claimed. A more accurate, evidence-led view is:
RoSPA’s telematics good practice guidance for employers emphasises that telematics can support safer driving for work, but it works best as part of a wider safety management approach (policy, training, feedback and accountability).
One of the biggest operational pitfalls is accidentally encouraging drivers to interact with phones while driving. In the UK it’s illegal to hold and use a phone (or similar device) while driving, with penalties including points and fines.
GreenRoad has previously said its driver app is disabled while in motion so it doesn’t encourage distracted driving. Even so, fleets should still have a clear rule: no interaction while moving.
If you deploy smartphone telematics for vans, it can matter for risk and claims handling — but it’s not an automatic discount lever.
